Understanding the Superintendent’s Rules

On February 15, 2018, the Superintendent of Real Estate announced that the effective date of new consumer protection rules has been amended. Originally scheduled for March 15, 2018, the Superintendent’s new rules will now come into effect on June 15, 2018. The additional time before the rules become effective will mean that real estate licensees and consumers will have more opportunities to learn about the changes, and to understand how current real estate industry practices will be affected.

The Real Estate Council of BC is working together with the Office of the Superintendent of Real Estate to help all licensees learn about the new rules. We will also be focusing on making sure that the public can access information about how these new rules are increasing protection for real estate consumers in BC.

Resources to Help You Manage the Changes Ahead

Here are some of the tools and educational resources that you will be able to take advantage of over the next three months:

  • New Rules Education Course: In collaboration with the Real Estate Division at UBC we are developing an online course for licensees covering the basics of the new rules. The course will take 2-3 hours to complete. It will be made available to licensees this spring.
  • Professional Matters Webinar Series: a monthly series of live webinars for Managing Brokers presented by the RECBC’s Professional Advisors. Each webinar will include a live narrated presentation, followed by a question and answer opportunity. The first webinar will be held in April. Managing brokers, check your inbox in early March for an invitation to sign up. Following each live presentation, the recorded webinar will be made available through RECBC’s website and the Real Advice e-newsletter.
  • Experts Round-table Podcast Series: a new monthly series of audio podcasts exploring timely real estate topics that you can tune into at your convenience. Each 15 minute episode will feature regulatory, legal and industry experts sharing their perspectives on subjects ranging from agency and disclosures, to consumer protection and informed consent.
  • In-Depth Info: As well as up-to-date information about the changes you can expect ahead, we’ll be doing a deep dive into key subject areas over the next few months, to ensure you have a comprehensive understanding of these important real estate topics:
